Dr Nigel Taylor (born 1956) has been a Kew Gardens employee since July 1977, initially working as Horticultural Taxonomist responsible for the correct naming of plants cultivated in the Gardens. Even before graduating with a botany degree from the University of Reading, where he was tutored by Gordon Rowley, his interest has been the taxonomy and conservation of Cactaceae (PhD awarded Dec. 2000) and other horticuihuaily important taxa (>200 publications including various books and co-authorship of the New Cactus Lexicon). Since August 1995 he has been Curator (Head) of Horticulture & Public Experience at Kew, managing the Gardens' horticultural staff and responsible for the living collections, which contain 100s of threatened taxa, some having been repatriated to their countries of origin. He has travelled to many cactus and succulent habitats since 1977, ranging from the Canary Islands, Mexico, USA, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, Bolivia and Brazil, the last of which he has visited at lead 25 times (he is married to Brazilian botanist, Daniela Zappi). Hobbies, besides cacti, include cooking and organic fruit & vegetable gardening - he is the proud holder of an RHS Banksian Medal for his 2009 exhibits at the Kew Horticultural Show.
