Ing. Zlatko Janeba, Ph.D.

was born on April 30, 1971 in Jablonec n. Nisou (Czechoslovakia). IIc graduated in organic chemistry from the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague. He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic under the supervision of Prof. Antonin HolÝ for his work in the field of development of biologically active analogues of nucleosides and nucleotides (antivirals, cytostatic agents). He holds research positions at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah and at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona. He worked as a radiochemist at Moravek Biochemicals, Brea, California. At present, he works at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, AS CR and his research is aimed at the design and synthesis of acyclic nucleoside phosphonate analogues as pharmaceutical targets. He has published 14 scientific papers, and filed 1 patent. He presented results of his research at 12 international conferences.

He is interested in traveling, photography, and nature in general. He has been engaged in study and cultivation of cacti and other succulent plants for more than 25 years. He enjoys all aspects of botamy, like taxonomy, ecology, physiology, genetics, and ethnobotany. He visited South America (3 times) and Mexico (3 times). He lived in the Southwest of the USA for 7 years. He gives talks and presents slideshows about cacti and keeps publishing articles in number of journals.

He is a member ot The Cactus and Succulent Society of America, British Cactus and Succulent Society, Bromeliad Society International, and Society of Cacti and Succulent Growers in Prague.

He is a member of the organizing team of the congress "Spiny Perspectives" under the patronage of the Prague Botanic Garden in Troja.
